AD – MIX

AD – MIX

Mortar Plasticizer & Air Entraining Powder

Specification Type

BS: 4887

Primary Uses

AD-MIX is an admixture for mortars that improves the workability of bricklaying, plastering mortars and increases their resistance to frost. AD-MIX is particularly valuable in cold weather, for damp or exposed work or when restricted site conditions do not permit storage of cement.

Description

AD-MIX is mortar plasticiser in powder form that replaces free cement in the mix and reduces the amount of water required to achieve workability. AD-MIX is recommended in all mortars, whenever more plastic and easily handle able mortar is required.

Action

AD-MIX replaces free cement in the mix and reduces the amount of water required to achieve the required workability, thus reducing the possibility of drying shrinkage which can result in cracking and crazing. Minute bubbles of air entrained in the hardened mortar provides space for the expansion of water when freezing occurs without disturbance to the body of the mortar.

Advantages

  • Remains elastic for longer.
  • Does not bleed or segregate.
  • Helps to eliminate efflorescence.
  • Easier and faster to spread, goes further.
  • Economical: Cuts labour costs, Less material used, Less waste.
  • Better bond.
  • Gives protection at temperatures below freezing point down to -2° C.
  • Improves frost resistance.
  • Reduces shrinkage.
  • Cracking and crazing minimized.
  • Improves weather resistance and durability.

Composition

AD-MIX is brown, free flowing powder. It is resin based and contains an organic dispersant.

Direction For Use

AD-MIX may either be premixed with gauging water in a storage tank or introduced into the mixing drum at the same time as the water. When mortar is mixed by hand it should be well turned over to achieve maximum plasticity. Comparative mixes with and without AD-MIX are shown below:

The action of AD-MIX is entirely physical. Used in accordance with our instructions, it does not significantly affect the setting time or other properties of the mortar.

Watch Point

AD-MIX provides protection from frost down to 2° C in the wet mortar.

Therefore AD-MIX should not be used at temperatures below 2° C or if the temperature is expected to drop below 2 C within 24 hours. Normal winter working precautions must be taken.

Dosage Rate

AD-MIX is added at the rate of 30 – 60 g per 100 kg of cement. Always use the type of sand recommended for a particular application. Test Mixes should be carried out to determine optimum dosage.

Compatibility

AD-MIX can be used with other admixture provided these are added separately to the mix. Can be used with all types of Portland cement, including sulphate resisting. Can also be used in cement/sand mortars as a further precaution against frost.

Effect Of Over Dosage

Whilst it is undesirable to exceed this stated dosage, the self controlling action of AD-MIX limits the amount of air capable of being entrained, thus safeguarding against over dosage.

Specification Clause
