History

In 1933, some Americans established a manufacturing concern under the name of Bitumen Emulsion India Ltd. The Company started to manufacture Cold Bitumen Emulsion in Lahore and Madraas. At that time the product Emulsion were newly introduced all over the world. The company successfully started producing Bitumen Emulsion with the cationic-based formulation.

In 1947, at the time of partition the branch in Lahore was taken over by Amalgamated Metal Corporation (AMC) London, England and was named as Bitumen Emulsions (Pakistan) Limited. This firm was incorporated in England. However, the company’s affairs and sales were under the management of British Metal Corporation a subsidiary of AMC.

At the time only three grades in Emulsions were supplied namely:

  • Medium Setting (HMX) used as premixing grade for roads.
  • Bitu-Proof “R” applied for water proofing of roofs.
  • Rapid Setting (HR), a product which earned its name for roads and concrete curing grade.

In spite earning a reputable name and monopoly in the market, there were minor complaints about the storage stability of the cationic-based Bitumen Emulsions. Even though the storage life was sufficient enough for use to the consumer, the firm felt important enough to eliminate such complaints.

In 1963, Mian Zafar Mahmood, M.Sc in Chemical Engineering and A.M.I. Mech.E (England) with postgraduate training in Petroleum Refining & Quality Control of products was appointed as Production Manager of the company. His first task was to remove the complaints about the storage stability of Cold Bitumen Emulsion.

After extensive time and money spent in research & development the base of Cold Bitumen Emulsions was changed from Cationic to Anionic. Under his management the company started expanding it business and list of products all over Pakistan. His efforts were praised when the company got its first major supply of Bitumen Emulsions in the construction of Karakuram Highway (KKH) gate way between Pakistan and China. He worked in this foreign company till 1982. In 1982 the company was closed and Mian Zafar Mahmood purchased the shares.

In 1987 the company was renamed as BITUMEN & ALLIED PRODUCTS COMPANY (PVT) LTD. and was registered in Lahore – Pakistan. Since then the company is working under this name.
